Prior to the discovery of gold in California it was thought to be wild and very far from civilization. That didn't stop those looking to get rich, those willing to do what it takes. The truth is not many got rich, but the wealth generation is impossible to see. A great many cities, or towns were supported solely by mining. They often slipped away to nothing when the mines shut down. Most people think they closed due to being mined out but that is the opposite in most cases. In most cases the gold mines in the U.S. were closed in 1942 when the federal govt. made it illegal to mine gold. After the war most miners and even mine owners never returned. In the years since laws have been passed making it difficult to mine here in the name of conservancy.
